In March, it was announced that Ventyr had won Norway's first major offshore wind project, Sørlige Nordsjø II.
The offshore wind project will feature bottom-fixed installations in the far south of the North Sea close to the maritime boundary between Denmark and Norway. Sørlige Nordsjø II will have a capacity of up to 1.5 gigawatts and aims to be operational by 2030.
Norconsult selected as preferred partner
On 16 October NVE announced the impact assessment program for the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind farm and its grid connection. Ventyr has chosen Norconsult as its advisor to perform the onshore and nearshore part of the impact assessment, a crucial step in defining how the electricity produced from the Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind farm will be connected to shore.
Ventyr is a joint venture between Parkwind, a leading European offshore wind project developer and Ingka Investments, which is the investment arm of Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer and a longstanding European investor in the offshore wind sector.
Norconsult's experts in power systems and environmental assessments, together with Ventyr, will now proceed to find the most efficient and sustainable solution for bringing power ashore before the project can progress with the license applications.
“Partnering with Norconsult for the Sørlige Nordsjø II project ensures we leverage Norway’s leading expertise in power systems and environmental assessments. Their deep knowledge of the local conditions is essential for developing a sustainable and efficient solution to connect offshore wind power to Kvinesdal. This collaboration is a critical step in delivering up to 1.5 gigawatts of clean energy from the North Sea to Norwegian shores, and we are confident that Norconsult’s insights will help us meet the project’s ambitious goals while minimising environmental impact”, said Anne Knausgård, Country Manager for Norway at Parkwind.
Local expertise
All new power production infrastructure projects are extensive and take time to develop and put into production. Thorough preliminary work will be carried out, including mapping the impact on nature and the environment, in addition to the actual integration into Norway's energy system.
"Renewable energy is an important part of Norconsult's growth strategy, and we are very pleased that Ventyr wants to collaborate with us on this major offshore wind project to successfully develop new power production in Norway. To overcome technical challenges, adapt to local environments, and find the most sustainable solutions, it is crucial to involve local experts who understand the local conditions. I am confident that our experts will handle this task exceptionally well," says Egil Hogna, CEO of Norconsult.
Natural focus area
Since 1929, Norconsult has been central to the development of Norwegian hydropower and the Norwegian power grid, ensuring clean and reliable electrical power for society. Offshore wind will be an important contributor to Norway's further industrial development and is a natural focus area for Norconsult.
Ventyr has two years to apply for a construction license based on the environmental impact assessments. The application will then be reviewed by the energy authorities, including a public hearing and community meeting.
